Let’s be honest—being a mum means life is always busy, loud, and filled with “mum, can I have...?” moments. If you’re a mum who loves to read but struggles to find the time (or the energy) to sit down with a book, an Audible subscription might just be the miracle you’ve been looking for. And if you’re shopping for a book-loving mum, buckle up, because I’m about to make your gift-giving a breeze.
I am a mum to twin boys and I’ve been an Audible member since 3 February 2013—12 years of listening—and I can confidently say it’s been worth every penny. I signed up for two reasons: I’m a slow reader, and I’m always on the go. Back in the day, I had plenty of time to read; now, between work, motherhood, and life in general, sitting down to read is a luxury I can rarely afford. Audible brought reading back into my life, as I now listen to books, all hands-free, and it can do the same for you—or the mum in your life.

A Game-Changer for Busy Mums
Imagine this scenario: you take your family to somewhere fancy like Center Parcs or Forest Holiday for the next Christmas holiday, the family holiday is in full swing, with kids shouting, and uncles and partners debating over a UNO game. Aunties, cousins and besties are giving it their karaoke and "Just Dance" best while you’re simultaneously cooking, hosting, and refereeing. Sure, they can help out, but you are a control freak and you will just end up redoing everything they have done anyway, so it's better they stay out of your way. At least you are far away from their chaos and within your own chaos...ahem, I digress.
Audible lets you escape into your favourite story while still keeping your hands free for all the multitasking. You can listen while driving, cooking, tidying up, or even during your precious five minutes of quiet (probably hiding in the pantry). Unlike a Kindle, Audible doesn’t require you to sit down and focus—which, let’s face it, leads to you nodding off after one page anyway. It’s an immersive, audio escape pod disguised as a subscription.
What’s It Like to Use Audible?
I’ll admit, it takes a bit of getting used to. At first, I’d get distracted, lose track of the story, and have to rewind, but to be fair, this happens to me when I read physical or ebooks too, my mind wanders. Some audiobooks—especially those with complex plots or a cast of thousands—can be harder to follow, but it gets easier. After all these years, I’ve got the hang of it, and trust me, the joy of “reading” while on the move is well worth the learning curve.
Audible also has incredible value. For £7.99 a month, you get one audiobook credit to spend on any title, no matter the price. Some books cost as little as £3.99 without credits, and there are free podcasts and audiobooks included in the membership. I’ve listened to classics like Crime and Punishment, Daughters of Nri, and Wuthering Heights—all for free with my subscription. Currently, I’m halfway through War and Peace. Yes, Tolstoy! And I didn’t pay a penny extra for it.
Why It’s a Brilliant Gift
Audible isn’t just for busy mums; it’s for anyone who loves books but struggles to find time to read. Take my 19-year-old niece, for example. She’s one of my favourite people (and a fellow bookworm). Next Christmas, I’m treating her to an Audible subscription and some extra credits. Why? She’s just started driving, so she can listen on her commute, during gym workouts, or while running. It’s the kind of thoughtful, practical gift that shows you really “get” someone.
In addition, audiobooks are instant. You don't have to wait for a delivery through the post like you would a physical book. On the flip side, you also can't wrap this up as a gift either.

Is Audible Worth It?
Audible isn’t cheap, but for me, it’s worth every penny. Over 11 years, I’ve read 145 titles (give or take a few pauses in membership). Some were fantastic; others... not so much. But the great thing is, if you don’t love a book, you can return it and get your credit back. That’s right—no being stuck with a dud. You can also pause your membership if life (or your budget) gets in the way. And if you’re still unsure, start with the free trial. You get one audiobook of your choice, completely free—no strings attached.
